On Tuesday, March 14 th , the Junior Class had the opportunity for a service retreat. They traveled to the Capuchin Services Center in Detroit. They stocked shelves, sorted can goods, sorted clothes, and put the clothing on individuals in need to shop.
The Capuchin Services Center helps individuals and families in need of food, clothing, and social work assistance. They feature a shoppers- choice pantry and retail style clothing distribution. The programs are operated 100% on donations with the generosity of individuals, communities, and private/public organizations.
The Director of the Capuchin Services Center, Djuna Barker, called me the next day to thank me for the volunteers and shared with me what a hard-working group of students that stepped up to help them. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were amazing Laker ambassadors.
The group went on to attend a beautiful Mass at St. Aloysius Church in Detroit. The church has a very unique and stunning architectural style. The priest, Fr. Sal Palozzolo, welcomed Our Lady of the Lakes students to the St. Aloysius Community Liturgy. It is a prayerful community that serves the downtown Detroit residents, especially the young adults. We then went to lunch at the historic Lafayette Coney Island. A big thank you to Mrs. Ross, Mrs. Romkema, Mrs. Hoffman and Mr. Allan for driving and chaperoning for the Junior Service Retreat.
