WATERFORD — Junior guard Brooklyn Robak got on a roll early, leading Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes to a big lead that they were able to hold for all four quarters.
The Lakers defeated Clarkston Everest Collegiate, 55-26, on Monday night at home in a CHSL Intersectional I league game.
Robak scored the first nine points and 12 of the first 14 as the Lakers took an 18-0 lead. The Mountaineers’ Celeste James scored their first basket with less than a minute left in the first quarter. The Lakers held a 28-11 halftime lead.
“Brooklyn got off to a great start, they were face-guarding her and trying to make it difficult on her, she got two or three transition buckets early in the game and hit a 3. When you see the ball go through early in the game it tends to carry over the rest of the game,’’ said Lakers coach Steve Robak (Brooklyn’s uncle and Quinn’s father).
Brooklyn Robak led all scorers with 22 points while Alexis Koenig added 11 for the Lakers.
“When you build a big lead like that, we played well at the start of the game, all of a sudden we’ve got a big lead, so it’s a tough thing as a team to stay focused and keep doing what we want to do,’’ Steve Robak said.
The Lakers are now 8-6 and 4-2 in the CHSL with both losses to Bishop Foley.
“This time of year it’s really about us really trying to get better and the things we have to get better at. I thought the girls were pretty focused all night and we played well for the most part,’’ the coach said.
He was also happy to go deep down the bench, giving some girls more playing time than usual.
“There’s been a lot of games where they haven’t gotten minutes on the floor,’’ Robak said. “It’s always nice to see girls down the bench getting minutes and making contributions in games. They do it every day in practice, but we want to see those game minutes for them too.’’
Our Lady of the Lakes will be at Marine City Cardinal Mooney on Thursday.
“I feel like we’re getting better. We had a ton of injuries early in the year — we missed a bunch of girls even over Christmas break,’’ Robak said. “We literally have been with our entire team for two and a half weeks. We probably are getting to the point where we should have been just before Christmas. We’re definitely behind but we feel like we’re making progress.’’
