The Catholic High School League has continually produced state finalists in football and has a rich history in Oakland County. Here’s a closer look at … members of the CHSL from this area for the 2019 season.
Head coach: Jason Albrecht (second season)
Last year: 5-5 overall, 2-2 in conference; lost to Clarkston Everest Collegiate in pre-district
Key players: Kyle Cartier, Sr. RB/S; Jack Loeffler, Sr. LB/TE; Anthony Mersino, Sr. WR/S; Patrick Morgan, Sr. OL/DL; Grant Ross, Sr. QB/S; Guillermo Valdovinos, Jr. K
Strengths: Running game
Overview: The Lakers were one of four teams from the division to make the playoffs a year ago, so they’ll once again be challenged during the regular season in 2019. Second-year head coach Jason Albrecht has seven seniors back from last year’s 5-5 squad. He’ll rely on that experience this season, hoping for balance on both sides of the ball.
Offensively, Our Lady has the ability to move the ball on the ground and through the air. Senior Grant Ross is back to lead the way at quarterback.
“Grant is a dual threat, which is a plus. Using him in both facets is a strength, not just for him but for our whole offense,” Albrecht said. “And we’ve got a group of seniors that have played together for awhile so they’ve kind of clicked and they have that tight brotherhood. That’s something that we’ve emphasized through the winter with the young kids.”
The Lakers also have a fair amount of experience back on defense with five starters and as many as 6-7 players returning with a good amount of playing time in their back pocket.
“That’s a benefit to us, as many have played multiple spots and know how I want the defense lined up,” Albrecht said. “There are times when we don’t get a full check in they know what our base call that we want to get in.
“I just think that if we stay healthy, we can do some great things.”
The Lakers host Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett on Aug. 30 to open their season.
